Reproduction of a painting copyrighted by John Ward Smith depicting the inspection by General and Martha Washington of the first United States coins. Other persons represented in the picture are, from left, Alexander Hamilton and Mrs. Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse (Director of the Mint), Tobias Lear, Adam Eckfeldt (operating the hand-screw coin press), Henry Voight and another workman. Also shows a Rittenhouse long-case clock, sketch of a head used on the first silver half dimes, household silver for coinage purposes, glowing fireplace, weighing scales, rolling machine, and overhead shafting operated by horse power outisde of the building. The room is the first floor of the coinage building of the First Mint, which stood at 7th & Filbert Streets. Founded in 1792, the mint began coin production the same year.
