Halftone reproduction of photograph showing the First United States Mint taken long after the Mint abandoned the facility. "Ye Old Mint" began operations here in 1792 with the production of 11,178 copper cents. Mint Director David Rittenhouse oversaw this first pressing, which represented the first spendable hard currency in America. In 1833 in order to keep pace with the demand for coinage a new Mint was built on the corner of Chestnut and Juniper Streets. Photograph shows the old building just before it was demolished in 1908. Signage indicates the presence of Chamber's Umbrella Factory and a pipe and tobacco merchant. In front of the store is a partial view of an early automobile.
