Built in 1898-99, the Spanish Renaissance-styled building was designed by the architectural firm of Cope & Stewardson for the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind, in Overbrook, Pa. The school, one of the oldest of its kind in the country, was established in 1832 by Julius Friedlander, a German-born teacher of blind children. In 1835 the school moved from Friedlander's rented quarters to a purpose-built home at the Northwest corner of Twentieth and Race Streets. The move to its new home in Overbrook led to an eventual name change, in 1946, to the Overbrook School for the Blind.

Exterior view of Girard College's Founders' Hall, the Greek-Revival masterpiece of architect Thomas Ustick Walter. Built 1833-47, Girard College opened in 1848 under the provisions of the will of Stephen Girard, one of the richest men in America.

Halftone reproduction of a photograph showing an exterior view of the buildings and grounds of the historic hospital. Founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, it was the first hospital in the United States. Designed by architect Samuel Rhoads, the hospital's Pine Building (seen through the trees in the photograph) is considered one of the finest examples of Colonial and Federal architecture in the city.
