Notes:

Depicts the the Quaker Almshouse, which fronted on Walnut Street between 3rd and 4th streets. Built in 1729 by the Society of Friends to provide housing, food and work for its poor members until 1767. The building was demolished in 1876.

The inscription lower right is a quotation from Henry Wadsorth Longfellow's poem Evangeline A Tale of Acadie: "Thus.....she entered the door of the Almshouse/ Sweet on the summer air was the odor of flowers in the garden."
