Exterior view of the Citizens' Volunteer Hospital, corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue, in 1864. Shows people on the sidewalk, workmen attending to the trolley tracks, and three kinds of horse-drawn vehicles. Opened in 1861, this was one of the earliest of the military hospitals to be set up in Philadelphia during the Civil War. Although not the largest, it provided 400 beds for sick soldiers passing through the city.
