Halftone reproduction of a photograph showing the central section of the U. S. Naval Asylum. Built between 1827 and 1833, Biddle Hall, as it became known, was designed by architect William Strickland, and is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. The Asylum was built as a retirement home for naval officers and seamen.
