Item 1, top: Captioned "Philadelphia From the Navy Yard." Image of the first location for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, at the Southwark Yard, between Washington Avenue and Wharton Street. The 1830s scene depicts the ship-houses on the left, a large ship in the foreground, and many more in the background. There is also a steamship (on the right), and a few rowboats. The Navy Yard was moved to League Island in 1871, to better meet the increased demands of the the navy's warship-building needs.. Lithograph by John Caspar Wild,19 x 17 cm, 1838.
Item 2, bottom: William Penn first landed in America on October 27, 1682, in New Castle, DE. He next sailed to Upland (renamed Chester), PA, arriving where the Delaware River joins Chester Creek on the 28th or 29th. This image depicts that landing event. Penn was hosted by Robert and Lydia Wade, at their residence, Essex House, built c. 1650. The house is pictured on the left, and a partial view of Penn's ship Welcome is in the right foreground. The small landing party is seen making its way to Essex House, with the Wades waiting to receive them further up the path. Cows graze on both sides of the creek, and forests surround the few houses lining the shore. Lithograph by William T. Breton, 21.5 x 13.5 cm, c. 1830
