Notes:
Item 1, left: Lengthy c. 1945 opinion column titled "Men and Things," wistfully detailing the disappearances of Philadelphia neighborhoods and islands, that gave way to skyscrapers and increased commerce on the Delaware River, since the turn of the 20th century. The examples mentioned are the Wanamaker Department Store and the Drexel Building, and the dredging of Smith's and Windmill Islands. The author wonders if people will research the history of Smith's and Windmill Islands, or just remember the exaggerated tales about pirates and shipwrecks and vice, that surrounded the colorful history of the islands. Newspaper column for an unidentified publication, 18.5 x 33.5 cm (irregular), undated, but c. 1945.
Items 2 and 3, center right: Two photographs from the Public Ledger, featuring activity at the League Island Navy Yard (now the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard). The upper image shows battleships in the background, and marines lined up in the foreground. The lower image shows a giant crane lifting a large propeller for the building (or repair) of a battleship. As the Public Ledger stopped publishing in 1942, these photographs were most likely taken in the late 1930s-early 1940s, in the lead-up to World War II. Battleship production at League Island stepped up greatly during this period. Reproductions of photographic prints for the Public Ledger, 9.5 x 8.5 cm (upper) and 9.5 x 10 cm (lower), undated, but c. 1940.
