Item 1, top:  As captioned, this is an image of a Philadelphia City Ice Boat, on the Delaware River.  The boat depicted here was City Ice Boat No. 1, a paddle steamer designed in 1837, specifically for clearing the ice on the Delaware River.  The scene in this engraving is at the United States Navy Yard, the nation's first official naval shipyard, located at Front & Federal Streets, Philadelphia.  Large ships are seen following close behind the ice boat, as it breaks through the ice during a snowstorm.  The Navy Yard's two prominent ship houses are seen on the left. Engraving for an unidentified publication's "Illustrated News" section, 23.5 x 17 cm, March 19, 1853.

Item 2, bottom:  Image of Kaighns Point, on the Delaware River in Camden, NJ.   A single sailboat lists at the shoreline, secured by ropes.  A few rowboats are seen, either tethered in the water or up on shore.  A pair of ducks stand undisturbed in the foreground, while some people are gathered at the river's edge in the background. Although dated 1846 in the bottom right corner, this drawing apparently imagines the scene in earlier, less bustling times.  In fact, modest ferry service already existed between Kaigns Point and South Street, Philadelphia, as early as 1823.  By the 1840s, multiple ferry companies were actively operating out of this very location, and continued well into the 1890s.  Original pen-and-ink drawing by G. R. Bonfield, 24 x 15.5 cm, 1846.
