Notes:

Item 1, top:  Top of the title page for the Sunday section of a newspaper, depicting a harbor scene on the Delaware River, near Penn's Landing, Philadelphia.  The image shows a schooner, Americans in a rowboat, Native Americans in canoes, and the Blue Anchor Tavern in the background.  Since three-masted schooners weren't introduced until about 1800, it was probably rare for Native Americans to be present in Philadelphia by then, except for trading purposes.  The Blue Anchor was built in 1681-1682, and hosted William Penn when he landed in Philadelphia on October 29, 1682.  Engraving for an unidentified newpaper, 19.5 x 8 cm, undated.

Item 2, center:  Image of Peg's Run, by artist William L. Breton, and printed by Kennedy & Lucas's Lithography in 1830.  Daniel Pegg was a Quaker who bought land along the Delaware River in 1686, north of Callowhill Street, in Northern Liberties.  The stream seen in this lithograph became known as Peg's Run, which ran near Pegg's property.  The stream ran through a culvert beneath a dirt road.  Depicted are a man piloting his boat on Peg's Run in the foreground, a cow pasture in the center, buildings in the background, and a wagon on the road.  17 x 12.5, c. 1830.

Item 3, Image of police boat Wm. S. Stokley, at the Delaware Harbor.  Since refineries, shipyards, and manufacturing plants were built close to the harbor, the Stokley was one of three police boats (between 1875-1883) outfitted for fighting fires at these facilities.  It was named after William Strumberg Stokley, Philadelphia's 72nd mayor (from 1872 to 1881).  He was a businessman-turned-politician, with a special interest in volunteer fire companies. Photographic reproduction for an unidentified publication, 17 x 11 cm, undated.
