Item 1, entire page:  Image and text from an article in the Scientific American science magazine, published in New York.  The upper section of the text describes in detail the work and characteristics of Philadelphia City Ice Boat No. 3--the largest of the city's three paddle steamers specifically designed for clearing ice on the Delaware River. The lower section of the text describes the regions patrolled by each of the three ice boats, from South Philadelphia to the Schuylkill River (Ice Boat No. 1), Fort Mifflin to Newcastle, DE (Ice Boat No. 2), and Delaware Bay to Cape Henlopen, DE (Ice Boat No. 3).  The image features Ice Boat No. 3 in action, breaking through the ice for the benefit of the ships following closely behind it.  Reproduction of a painting by artist Frank Cresson Schell, for Scienticfic American, 24 x 18 cm, undated (but c. 1880s).
