Notes:

Item 1, top:  Titled "Departure of a Packet," this 1830 image shows multiple rivercraft on an unidentified river.  A packet boat was principally a midsize mail-carrying boat, but also carried passengers and some goods.  It is not clear which one of the boats seen in this lithograph is the "packet" referred to, as any one of the sailboats, schooners, or even the rowboat could have served those purposes in 1830.  Lithograph on stone by George Lehman, from a drawing by S. Owen, published by C. G. Childs, 22 x 18 cm, 1830.

Item 2, bottom:  League Island is located on the Delaware River, just east of the mouth of the Schuylkill River.  This image shows the island sometime in the late 1860s, during its earlier years of industrialization.  Schooners, sailboats, a pilot gig (a 6-oared rowboat), and a paddle steamer are depicted transporting mail, goods and passengers to and from Philadelphia.  Wharves can be seen to the left of the isalnd.  In 1871, the US Navy Yard moved its location to League Island.  At the time, a narrow channel barely separated the north side of the island from mainland Philadelphia.  The Back Channel was ultimately--in stages--filled in by the 1920s, making League Island an island in name only.  Engraving by F. B. Schell, from a drawing by "J. Dalziel sc Phila" (probably John Dalziel), 18 x 7 cm, undated (but likely c. late 1860s).
