Halftone reproduction of a photograph of a popular shopping district. Pedestrians teem the sidewalks, while others cross the intersection at Eighth and Market Streets. At left is a partial view of Strawbridge & Clothier's drygoods store, and on the right is Lits department store.

Shows four railroad lines on Washington Avenue where it intersects with 22nd Street. In the distance are the extensive premises of the Knickerbocker Ice Co. Also shows partial views of surrounding buildings. A wide variety of industry from coal yards to iron and steel works were situated along Washington Avenue during the early years of the 20th Century.

Shows four railroad lines on Washington Avenue with industrial buildings beyond. Signage identifies Hancock & Bro. First National Coal Depot and Central Iron Foundry. Two horse carts laden with coal stand outside the coal yard. In the first half of the 20th Century there were numerous coal yards, iron and steel works, and many other industries all along Washington Avenue.
