Notes: Item 1, top: View of the American Philosophical Society's hall, 104 S. 5th Street. Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin to promote "useful knowledge", the American Philosophical Society is the oldest learned society in the United States. The Philosophical Hall was built in 1789 to provide a meeting place for the society as well as a home for its growing library. In this photograph the hall has a third floor, added in 1890 to solve a critical space problem. The addition detracted from the harmony of the original building and was removed in 1949. Clipped from booklet of the society's proceedings V.XXXII, no. 143, May 22-26, 1893. 22.7 x 13.8 cm.
Notes: Item 2, bottom: Aerial view of Rittenhouse Square showing the first high-rise apartment building in this prestigious neighborhood. 1830 Rittenhouse Square, located on the southeast corner of 19th Street, was built in the 1920s. Photograph reproduced in unidentified publication. 12.5 x 10.5 cm.
