Notes: Item 1, top: View of the Merchants' Exchange building from the intersection of Walnut Street and Dock Street. The oldest existing stock exchange in the United States, the Exchange opened in 1834. Designed by noted architect William Strickland, the Greek Revival style building is notable for its circular rear portico fronting Dock Street. A partial view of Girard Bank, another neoclassical building, can be seen in the distance. It was formerly the home of the First Bank of the United States. Shows street and pedestrian traffic, including horse-drawn omnibuses. Etching by S.T.Davies after W.H.Bartlett. Published in Bartlett's Classic Illustrations of America, 1839. 18.2 x 12.5cm.
