Item 1, top: The Library Company of Philadelphia was founded in 1731, by Benjamin Franklin and his discussion groups, as the first subscription library in the country. After operating in several temporary locations, a permanent home at 105 S. 5th Street was built in 1791, by William Thornton, in the Palladian Revival style. This photograph shows that building, before being demolished in 1884. Photograph, 14 x 17 cm, undated.
Item 2, bottom: Jefferson Medical College was chartered in 1824, and located at 513 Locust Street. The college moved in 1828 to a new location at the SW corner of 10th & Sansom Streets, to accomodate the rapidly growing number of students. This image shows the Ely Building after a new Greek Revival facade (designed by architect Napoleon LeBrun) was added in 1845. Although this building was demolished between 1898-1907, the Thomas Jefferson University/Sidney Kimmel Medical College occupies the same location. Photograph, 18.5 x 13.5 cm (oval cropping), c. 1854.
