Image 1, center: Clipping from an unknown publication features an illustration of the Philadelphia Merchantile Library's home on the southeast side of South Fifth Street, at the corner of 5th and Library Streets. Although founded in 1821, the Library would not assume its 5th Street location until 1844, at which time two adjacent lots were purchased and the featured Library Building was constructed. It opened in 1845, and was demolished in 1925. The contents were moved to the Franklin Building on 10th Street. The library was ultimately absorbed by the Free Library. Daguerreotype, 18 x 21 cm, undated (probably c. 1845).
