Item 1, entire page: Image showing the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, built in 1845 by architect John Notman, in the Italianate Revival style. The Athenaeum was founded in 1814, to collect books, documents, journals, charts, etc., of historic American arts and knowledge, and to make them available to the public. After outgrowing several locations, it moved into the building shown here, at 219 S. 6th Street, in 1847. The text accompanying this item gives a more detailed description of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the building, location, and collections.
