Item 1, top: Image of the Old Academy, located at 4th Street, below Arch Street. The building on the left was originally a religious school, erected in 1740. In 1749, it became the Academy of Philadelphia, a private secondary school, founded by a group led by Benjamin Franklin; in 1755, it became the College of Philadelphia, and the first building for what grew into the University of Pennsylvania in 1791. The dormitory on the right was added in 1765. Reproduction of an 1882 watercolor painting by David McNeely Stauffer, for an unidentified publication, 18 x 12 cm, undated.
Item 2, bottom: Image of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at 13th & Locust Streets. The building was designed by William Strickland, in the Greek Revival Style, and purchased by General Robert Patterson in 1836. After Patterson's death in 1881, the Historical Society purchased the building, occupying it until it was demolished between 1905-1909. A new fireproof building, designed by Addison Hutton, was erected in 1910 at the same location; the Society has continued at this location to this day. Reproduction of a photograph for an unidentified publication, 15 x 10 cm, undated.
