Item 1, entire page:  Painting of the Old Academy, located at 4th Street, below Arch Street.  The building on the left was originally a preaching hall and religious school, erected in 1740, by architect Edmund Woolley.  In 1749, it became the Academy of Philadelphia, a private secondary school, founded by a group led by Benjamin Franklin; in 1755, it became the College of Philadelphia, and the first building for what grew into the University of Pennsylvania in 1791. The dormitory on the right was added in 1765.  Original watercolor painting by David McNeely Stauffer, 31.5 x 25.5, 1882.
