"The character but not the density of the traffic at this intersection has changed in the many decades since this photograph was made. On the right is John Wanamaker's first store at the corner of 6th Street. This store was opened in 1861, but continued to carry his name after he opened what became America's first department store at Market and 13th Streets. Tower Hall is also visible, center."--OPEP, p. 79.

The intersection; horse-drawn carts and wagons, streetcars and tracks, and people in the street. Stores line the street, decorated with advertising, including: "Tower Hall" ; "Garitee & Son" ;"American Clothing Co." ; "Williamson & Cassedy" ; "Oakhall" ; "Wanamaker and Brown."
