View of stock yards with hotel and outbuildings situated west of Philadelphia circa 1862. The scene is framed by a border flanked in the upper corners with scrollwork and vignettes portraying the heads of a cow and a ram. Shows horse-drawn carriages parked on the oval pathway. Two men stand conversing in the foreground, while others gather under the covered porch of the hotel. In the distance a crowd of people are viewing the livestock which are kept in enclosures.The droveyard was conveniently located at the junction of two highways leading from the rich cattle country to the most important bridges for reaching the city. The Drove Yard Hotel, formerly known as Ludwig's Hotel, was celebrated in its day for its extensive accommodations for farmers and drovers. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1896.
