Hand-colored engraving on wood depicting the Pump House in Centre Square, Philadelphia. From 1800 to 1815, the Centre Square Water Works was used to deliver water from the Schuylkill River to subscribers and hydrants in various parts of the city. Designed in the neo-classic style by Benjamin Latrobe, the white marble building, surrounded by trees and walkways, became a popular destination for pleasure-seekers. In this depiction, several couples stroll the grounds while two musicians play their instruments on the steps. Smoke is shown billowing from the steam engines inside the building. The Pump House was demolished in 1827.
