Reproduction of an engraving shows a busy commercial stretch of Market Street from Sixth.The distinctive features of Tower Hall, at 518 Market Street, dominates the skyline.This spectacular building was erected for Col. Joseph M. Bennett, a successful clothier. It was here that the young John Wanamaker learned the clothing trade. He went on to open his first store at Sixth and Market in the building seen in the right foreground.

Shows elevated view of the south side of Market Street taken from the northwest corner of the intersection with 9th Street. The spread of commerce along Market Street is evident by the profusion of businesses which have taken over the ground floors of buildings once used as private residences. Awnings on the north side of the street provide a covered walkway for pedstrians and shopkeepers alike. A horse-drawn carriage stands at the curbside at lower left.

An elevated view of the north side of Market Street as seen from the southwest corner of the intersection with 9th Street. Signage indicates a variety of businesses including hardware, looking glasses, drugs, and china and glass. In the foreground shade stands a horse-drawn covered wagon.
