Color illustration from the June 1936 issue of Fortune magazine showing a scene outside the Broad Street Station. The "Chinese Wall" was a long one-story viaduct that carried trains of the Pennsylvania Railroad into the station.. The structure, with its pedestrian unfriendly archways effectively divided the city in two and stymied the development of its western side.

Notes:

Item pdcc00989, bottom [image dimensions 15.3 cm x 9.0 cm]:

Reproduction of a photograph published in June 1936 of Fortune magazine illustrating an article on transportation in Philadelphia at that time. Shows an aerial view of traffic on Chestnut Street with a Brill trolley car surrounded by automobiles. A scattering of pedestrians walk on both sides of the congested street.
