Notes:
Depicts John Fitch's 1786 steamboat passing Windmill Island on the Delaware River, with the Philadelphia waterfront beyond. Shows Fitch's original design for his steamboat, which utilised a bank of oars on either side of the vessel. Before his death in 1798, he built four mechanically succesful steamboats. The first in the United States, they proved financial failures. Aso shows a variety of watercraft on the river, including ships at anchor on the Philadelphia side. Although mechanically successful, Fitch's steamboats were financial failures, leaving Robert Fulton to finally succeed with the idea.
