Halftone reproduction of the USS frigate "Alliance" under full-sail in stormy waters. While serving in the Continental Navy during the struggle for Independence, the 36-gun frigate captured four British merchant vessels. After the war she was bought by Philadelphia financier Robert Morris, who had her converted to a an East Indiaman, and sailed from Philadelphia to Canton and back in record time. When she was no longer seaworthy, the former frigate was abandoned on the shores of Petty Island across from Philadelphia, on the Delaware River. Her hull lay exposed at low tide until dredging work 1901 disposed of her remains.
