Notes:
Halftone reproduction of photograph showing the historic inn. Located on 2nd Street above Poplar, the hostelry was built c.1806. Shows a man and three children posing in front of the entrance to the courtyard. It was in front of the Bull's Head Hotel, in 1809, that the first rail track was laid in America. A car was placed on a track of wooden rails eight feet wide and a hundred and eighty feet long. It was found that a horse could pull a heavy load upon the track with more ease than several horses used upon an ordinary road. Horse railroads soon became a common sight in the city and beyond.
