Just before their six month occupation of Philadelphia came to an end in May of 1778, the British Army staged an extravagant celebration the likes of which had never been seen in the Quaker city. The day-and-night revelry with the made-up name of Meschianza, began with a regatta of barges on the Delaware River accompanied by cannon fire, and continued well into the night with singing, music and fireworks, ending with a fancy dress ball at the estate of Joseph Wharton, in South Philadelphia. One of the events held on Wharton's estate was a mock jousting tournament. The illustration shows the protagonists, the Black Knights and the White Knights, facing each other in the compound. On the front row of each of the pavilions are seated seven young ladies dressed in Turkish habits.
