Item pdcc00155, top [image dimensions 18.5 cm x 23.5 cm]:
Engraving on wood depicting the evening procession passing under the arch on Chestnut Street flanked with crowds of onlookers. Buildings are festooned with flags, ribbons and bunting. Businesses identified are John Wanamaker and J. & J. Dobson. The curve of the arch bears the inscription: The Charter of Penn Abides While Centuries Pass On. The keystone displays the year 1882.

Illustration showing Japanese dignitaries being greeted on their arrival in Philadelphia by Mayor Alexander Henry and Council members. They arrived at the depot of the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad at Broad Street and Washington Avenue on June 10th. 1860. The occasion marked one stop on a nationwide tour by the first Japanese diplomatic mission to the United States. It was during their stay in Philadelphia that the first recorded game of Japanese chess, called Shogi, was played in the United States.
Written in pencil bottom right is the date June 1860.
