A celebrated arctic explorer, Dr. Elisha Kane (1820-1857) died in Havana, Cuba while recuperating from a courageous attempt to find the lost expedition of polar explorer Sir John Franklin. His body was carried by funeral train from New Orleans to Philadelphia, where it lay in state at Independence Hall.
A group of mourners surround the casket which sits in the center of the room. It is draped with the American flag and a garland of flowers. The Liberty Bell is shown in the far right corner.
