Clipping from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. June 1860 written in pencil below image. The illustration shows the procession of the Japanese delegation and City dignitaries arriving at the front of the Continental Hotel in horse-drawn carriages. Japanese footmen follow the carriages and uniformed American guards line the route holding back the crowds of interested onlookers. The occasion marked one stop on a nationwide tour by the first Japanese diplomatic mission to the United States.
The newly opened Continental Hotel at Ninth and Chestnut Streets was Philadelphia's premier hotel and the largest hotel in the country, accomodating a thousand people. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln stopped there on his way to Washington D.C.
