"The famed Walnut Street Theatre, oldest theater in continuous use in America, opened in 1809 as the New Circus, whose main attractions were equestrian and other circus acts. Through a series of structural changes it evolved into a playhouse for stage performances and became the Walnut Street Theatre for the first time in the 1820s. In the 1860s, when this photograph was made, little change in the original design of the facade could be detected. Walnut Street itself seemed to have undergone little change from its earlier residential character."--OPEP, p. 149.
The theater on a block with store fronts. Sign on the building: "Walnut St. Theatre." Men standing and sitting on the steps and sidewalk in front of building. Construction materials in front of the building on the right. Street lamps in front, streetcar tracks run along Walnut Street, and a horse and carriage on the street.
