The Academy of Natural Sciences was founded in 1812 "for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning." The oldest natural sciences museum in the Western Hemisphere, the academy opened its doors to the public in 1812. Its collection of plants and animals from around the world grew so rapidly that the Academy outgrew its buildings three times in sixty years.
