The institution originated in 1812 and was incorporated five years later. The building, which was originally a place of worship for followers of the doctrine of Emanuel Swedenbourg, was modified for its new purpose. It is a quadrangular building, about forty-four feet square, surmounted by a dome.

The engraving shows the domed building in a street setting. People can be seen both walking and stationary in small groups. In the center of the image three men and two horses and a dog are grouped beside a fire station. On the lower left corner sits a gas street lamp, and a covered wagon is disappearing out of view. On the lower right two gentlemen are in conversation.
