Reproduction of an oil painting by Higbee which hangs in the Academy of Music. Also known as The New Theater, the Chestnut Street Theater was considered the most elegant theatre in the country when it opened in 1794. It burnt down in 1820.

Originally called the Philadelphia Opera House when it opened in 1908, the hall was built by opera impresario Oscar Hammerstein I to be the home of his Philadelphia Opera Company.  It was sold two years later to the Metropolitan Opera of New York, when it was renamed.
