A museum featuring "ten thousand chinese things" Nathan Dunn's Chinese Museum informed and entertained Philadelphians from 1838 to 1841. Filled with a variety of objects, art and life-size figures in recreated Chinese room settings, the museum gave Americans a brief glimpse of a country that most never would see.
Founded in 1838 by merchant and philanthropist Nathan Dunn, the building shared its home at Ninth and George (now Sansom) Streets with the Philadelphia Museum. In 1842. Dunn moved his collection to London.

Nathan Dunn sailed to Canton, China in 1818 to eliminate a substantial debt he had amassed after several failed business ventures. By 1822 he had established himself in the China Trade and with his new-found wealth he formed the world's largest Chinese collection. He brought the collection to Philadelphia where he established his museum of "China in miniature".

The engraving shows a Chinese pagoda with the words "The Chinese Collection" above. The reference is to the Chinese Museum which was housed in the Philadelphia Museum building which stood at the corner of Ninth & Sansom Streets, Philadelphia.
