Founded by Gustav Hinrichs, the opera house was built in 1888 and was home to the National Grand Opera.

"This theater was built on the site of the original Academy of Fine Arts, and opened in December 1870. It offered variety shows that included ballets, musical performers, acrobats and magicians, and was in existence until after the turn of the century."--OPEP, p. 139.
The building with a large first floor entrance which sits forward the main building. On the roof of the entrance is a large clock with an eagle at the top. A man is leaning on the roof peering over the edge. On the main building toward the top is a sign: "Fox's New American Theatre, erected 1870." On either side of the entrance are stores. On the left: "J. Theo. Doll Fancy Goods", and on the right: "Men's furnishing goods, collar cuffs ... Wm. E. Hooper & Co., late of 9th & Arch." Sign leaning in front of store on left: "Doll's new store, croquet, cheapest in the city, 1027 Chestnut St." Three street lamps, each with a sign: "Fox's New American Theatre"; and signboards leaning against them: on the left "J. Theo. Doll, fancynovelties...", on the right "Notice! linen collars and cuffs..." Men in front of the stores and the theater.
