A leaf from a Book of Hours. Books of Hours were prayer books owned by ordinary Christians in Medievel Europe. Owing to their popularity, and because they were passed down from generation to generation, they are among the most common illuminated manuscripts to have survived from that period.
The leaf shown here is made from vellum (calf skin) and contains numerous decorated initials with spaces between the letters burnished in gold.
