Notes:
Lapis Lazuli has been mined from Badakhshan, Afghanistan since the 7th millennium BC. The word "lapis lazuli" is derived from the latin word “lapis” meaning “stone” and the Persian word “lazhuward” meaning “blue.” Lapis lazuli produces a pigment known as “ultramarine” which means “beyond the sea.” The pigment was so named because Europeans imported the mineral overseas from Afghanistan for use in painting and printing in blue ink.
