Notes:
A bound copy of various editions of Graham’s Magazine. Graham's was a periodical based in Philadelphia published from 1841-1858. The magazine was founded by George Rex Graham and edited by Edgar Allen Poe until April 1842. During 1846-1856, the magazine was referred to as Graham’s American Monthly Magazine of Literature and Art. Graham’s Magazine featured many of Poe’s works in its infancy. Ironically, Poe’s greatest literary rival, Rufus Wilmot Griswold replaced the poet and commonly refused to publish Poe’s work. When Griswold was relieved in 1844, Graham offered Poe his editorial job back, however Poe refused. Graham then turned down publishing The Raven and published The Philosophy of Composition instead, which was a work by Poe that elucidated his theory on how good writers should write. Poe used his The Raven to demonstrate his theory.
