Notes:

Item 1, top:  Brief article listing the earliest prisons in colonial Philadelphia.  First, a single cage (7 feet by 5 feet) was constructed at Front & High (now Market) Streets in 1682.  Then, in 1685, a house was hired as a temporary prison, replaced in 1695 by the High Street Prison, at 2nd & High Streets.  It was replaced by the Old Stone Prison in 1720, at 3rd & High Streets.  That was replaced in 1776, by the Walnut Street Prison, at 6th & Walnut Streets.  Article for an unidentified newspaper, 6.5 x 4.5 cm, 1940.

Item 2, bottom:  Text and photograph (by Bulletin staff photographer Norman Mevius), for a 1948 article about a train derailment in Paoli, PA.  The caption above the image reads, "Derailed Tank Cars on Pennsy Tracts East of Paoli," and below the image, the caption reads, "Freight wreck that tied up Main Line commuter service and delayed east-west traffic today.  View is looking West."  The article titles read, "Paoli Wreck Snarls PRR Line 3 Hours, Delays Commuters, Blocks Main  East-West Traffic but Route Is Cleared Long Before Homeward Rush of Riders."  Fortunately, the three tank cars were empty, and, although the accident caused significant rush hour delays, all four obstructed tracks were cleared by 10:00 a.m., after only three hours.   Article and photographic reproduction for The Evening Bulletin, 20 x 28 cm; the image measures 20 x 14 cm.  April 7, 1948.
