Item 1, entire page: Commemorative poster depicting the tragic fire on March 15, 1856, aboard the Steamboat New Jersey, on the Delaware River, between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. The caption reads: "Terrible Conflagration and Destruction of the Steamboat 'New Jersey,' on the Delaware River, above Smith's Island, on the Night of March 15th, between 8 and 9 o'clock, in which dreadful calamity over 50 Lives are supposed to have been lost." Defective boilers and a fireplace were blamed for the fire, which destroyed the boat and killed 62 people. The scene is rendered in graphic detail by artist and lithographer John L. Magee and hand-colored by Alfred Pharazyn. Hand-colored lithograph poster, "published and for sale by J. L. Magee...and A. Pharazyn", 34.5 x 25.5 cm, 1856.
