Notes:

Item 1, left:  Detailed article discussing the legitimacy of using circumstantial evidence to convict and execute accused offenders.  The case used as an example for the debate was the high-profile murder in Philadelphia of Catherine Rademacher, on March 23, 1848.  Shoemaker Charles Langfelt was convicted and executed for the murder, although he never confessed to it.  The case was often cited by opponents to capital punishment.  Text for an unidentified newspaper, 1/19/1904.  (For a sensationalized drawing of the murder scene at the time, see item #pdcc3152.)

Item 2, right:  Detailed article about the discovery at an auction of four police badges that dated back to a period in early 1850s Philadelphia, before a fully-consolidated police force existed.  Neighborhoods used local night watchmen to police the streets.  The badges were from the Spring Garden, Northern Liberties, and Center City areas. Text from an unidentified newspaper, 1/17/1893.
