Item 1, top: Brief 1915 newspaper article, marking the 40th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the second Market Street Bridge, on November 20, 1875. This was a critical bridge for both personal vehicles as well as freight trains, spanning the Schuylkill River at Market Street, to connect 30th Street Station with Center City. [See the previous item #pdcc03199, to see an engraving depicting that historic fire.] The article also lauds the swift construction of its successor, the third version of the bridge. According to this article, the ruined bridge was immediately rebuilt and reopened by Christmas, about three weeks after the fire. This third bridge remained in use until 1888. Today's Market Street Bridge is its fifth permanent construction, in use since 1932. Article for an unidentified newspaper, 5.5 x 14 cm, 1915.
Item 2, bottom: This photograph was reprinted in February 1935, marking the 36th anniversary of the St. Valentine's Day Blizzard in Philadelphia, on February 14, 1899. The caption reads, "This was the weather man's Valentine gift to Philadelphia...," and credits J. B. Klumpp with the photograph, taken on Broad Street right after the storm. This historic storm actually affected most of the United States, and was called the Great Arctic Outbreak of 1899. It began in early February on the west coast, and frigid temperatures and snow swept across the country for the next few weeks, hitting Philadelphia on Valentine's Day. In the foreground at left is the Union League building, followed by the Lafayette Hotel, the West End Trust Company building under construction, and City Hall in the background.
