Item 1, entire page: Detailed editorial in a New York newspaper, supporting capital punishment, and justifying using a defendant's past criminal behavior as relevant, especially to overcome circumstantial evidence. One of the examples cited, and depicted in a sensationalist image, was convicted murderer Arthur Spring, of Center City, Philadelphia. His first conviction was declared a mistrial at the time of this article; he was retried and convicted again, and hanged in Moyamensing Prison on June 10, 1853. Text and image appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, measuring 24 x 28 cm, while the inset engraving is 19.5 x 20 cm, dated 4/16/1853.
