Item 1, entire page: Photograph of the aftermath of the fire that destroyed Colonel William Chamberlain Patterson's bonded warehouse, at Front & Lombard Streets. The warehouse was used during the Civil War to store sugar, molasses, and cotton. After the war, it became a storage facilty for numerous distilleries. Unfortunately, the multi-story buildings were not able to withstand the weight of the many thousands of barrels of whiskey. On August 4, 1869, a wall reportedly collapsed, followed by explosions, causing a river of burning whiskey to travel into the gutters and sewers, creating a path of destruction all the way to the Delaware River. Photograph, 33.5 x 26 cm, August 1869.
