Count Donop was a Hessian colonel in the Revolutionary War who volunteered to capture Fort Mercer, near Red Bank, New Jersey to open up the Delaware River for General Howe's navy. Donop took command of 2000 Hessian troops and crossed the River to New Jersey on October 22, 1777. The Battle of Red Bank commenced that afternoon following Colonel Christopher Greene's rejection of Donop's demand for surrender. The Hessians met with superior fire power and suffered heavy losses. Donop himself was fatally wounded and it is said he died a few days later in a farm house close by, which had been turned into a temporary military hospital.
