Hits all the points you expect, although having an invalids home constantly invaded by enemies is getting a bit predictable.

Literature of the highest sort, unpredictable and character driven...and probably un-publishable today, given some of the characterizations and situations that are covered. Set in time from mid-30's France to post-war occupied Germany, Every principle figure is uniquely despicable.

Not up to standard? An interesting start, but: the misogynistic characters are just a bit...too misogynistic to be believable, A bit of the language is stilted and repetitive, a major plot point is left unresolved, and the ending is a bit rushed and unsatisfying. This has always been the weakest of Cussler's series, so its hard to say if moving on to the 4th different coauthor in 8 books is a cause or a symptom.

Unexpectedly ok. For a book who's premise is 'teenage girl president', the preaching and political vulgarity was refreshingly absent.

Disappointing. The contrast of the main story with the flashbacks was nice, but the main story was also terrible - generic, undefined enemies with no proper background or setting, and a terrible ratio of words to art combine with a dull gray palette to lull the reader to sleep.

Visually, stylistically, verbally, all the elements are distinctly there - they just don't gel into a story.

A generational tale of a family of Philadelphia police officers, chock full of period detail with only a few hollow notes interspersed throughout - most of which can probably be chalked up to personal preference and not any fault of the author.

It's nice to see a recurring character series where the author isn't afraid to take narrative risks - in this case altering his established structural style by using a parallel flashback storyline.

Some might consider the structural and plot elements lifted from Dante's Inferno to be a bit heavyhanded, and if I was more familiar with the 700 year old poem, I might agree; but my layman's association with the work found the parallel perfect.
