I'll be reading all the collected volumes over the next few weeks, it's refreshing to get the unsanitized originals as their depth allowed more personal storylines. Far too many comics get lost in a' danger to the planet, no galaxy, no UNIVERSE' spiral of threat escalation. Stories on that scale are so mind bogglingly stupid that all sense of character and pathos is lost.

Fantastic collections of one-shots and two-parters.

A Twilight Zone-ish take - Dropping J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry 100 years in the future for three days of campaigning immediately before Gettysburg. Most likely inspired by the belief that, had Stuart arrived earlier the South might have won; this is a light, fun tale that combines historical facts with anachronistic juxtaposition.

Not short stories, since they are ostensibly true, more like humorous vignettes about people fighting against, taking advantage of, or perpetuating various forms of bureaucracy. 

The copy I read was lent to me by Gettysburg College, and has not been checked out in 53 years (last use 3/26/63).

The authors reminisces about growing up in small town Michigan during and after WWI, a time marked most clearly by the slow death of the railroads and the concomitant birth of car and commuter culture.

A collection of short stories, the authors gimmick being that his detective finds cases and clues in the various classified ads of the many newspapers in turn of the century (19th century) New York City. Very in and of its time, of particular note from a sociological standpoint. 

The fourth installment in a series is not the place to suddenly introduce a heretofore un-hinted at supernatural element.

A few odd literary flourishes (We'll blame the co-author) but a satisfying romp all in all.

A twist and turn filled thriller - everything one expects from Deaver.
